Remote Learning

Remote learning can occur if a school is made aware of a local outbreak of Covid-19, if children need to isolate due to a positive test or if the child or family member is awaiting a test. Preparations will be made so that learning can still continue and the community can remain safe.

Where possible, it is beneficial for young people to maintain a regular and familiar routine. Dereham Church Of England Infant and Nursery Academy recommends that each ‘school day’ maintains structure where possible. Please see our recommended timetable for the day created by some of our parents:

Remote Learning Timetable by the PTA

The principles for delivery of remote learning are:

• Children will receive learning opportunities for a range of subjects for each school day via Tapestry (an online system)
• Learning will be well-sequenced as per our current curriculum model enabling knowledge and skills to build
• Clear explanations will be offered through video links from school or shared online material
• Work will be checked daily by class teachers via Tapestry and comments/feedback will be shared
• Activities will be shared through suggested tasks and ideas

Online safety at Dereham Church Of England Infant and Nursery Academy is paramount. We politely remind our parents to check settings on their devices and to monitor the internet access your child has. We have recommended several websites for home learning, which are all child-friendly, however, it is still important to check what your child has access to.

Nursery- Parents are encouraged to assist their child to choose a book from the nursery library to share with their child at home in order to develop their speaking, listening and early literacy skills. Parents are encouraged to upload photos and learning opportunities of their children at home to Tapestry. Next Steps are added to Tapestry for parents to practice with their children at home.

Reception-The children are encouraged to practice reading skills at home, and take home a reading book which matches their level of development. Phonics keyrings are sent home when sounds are taught in class to practice at home. They are also given keywords to practice reading on sight. ‘Maths Monkey’ will also accompany the children home to support their learning at some point during the year. Each half term home learning ideas are sent home related to theme and celebrated in class and put on display when completed. Parents are encouraged to upload photos and learning opportunities of their children at home to Tapestry. Next Steps are added to Tapestry for parents to practice with their children at home.

Spellings are sent home half termly. The children are given mathematics home learning task on a weekly basis linked to that week’s mathematics learning. Mathematics activities are completed in the Home Learning Book. Occasionally activities linked to the current class theme are sent home to develop and extend children’s learning. Each half term home learning ideas are sent home related to theme and celebrated in class and put on display when completed. The Artist of the Month is discussed in class and children can complete their own artwork related to the artist at home.

Year Two- The children are encouraged to practice reading skills at home by taking a reading book which matches their level of development, they are encouraged to read and change their reading book on a regular basis. Spellings are sent home each half term. The children are given mathematics and theme homework on a weekly basis linked to that week’s learning. Each half term home learning ideas are sent home related to theme and celebrated in class and put on display when completed. The Artist of the Month is discussed in class and children can complete their own artwork related to the artist at home.

In Years One and Two, every child is sent home with 5 spellings (from the Common Exception Words from their year group) to work on at home.

Reading

At our school reading is extremely important. Every child has daily phonics sessions based on ‘Essential letters and sounds’ and weekly reading comprehension sessions where we look, read and talk about books, and is also heard read  individually to an adult. However, we need your help too:

Hearing your child read for just five minutes a day can help improve their reading skills significantly.

Reading for pleasure is more likely to determine whether a child does well at school than their social or economic background.

Please sign your child’s reading record when you have heard them read.

If you have any concerns, worries or problems reading with your child, please speak to your class teacher or any member of staff who will be happy to help and support reading at home.
