On Tuesday 4th February we visited Hawk and Owl Trust at Sculthorpe Moore. This was to support our Power of Reading learning and our poems inspired by Shirley Hughes’ Out and About. During the day we completed observational drawings from the look out point, went on a habitat walk, discovered minibeasts and went pond dipping. Lots of fun was had by all.

During Spring 1 we are learning about poems. We have been reading different ‘Out and About’ poems by Shirley Hughes. We were able to go on a local walk to observe what water looked like. We used our senses of touch, see and hear to explore water on our walk. We have used this experience to write our own water poems.

We have had lots of opportunities to explore and experience nature, to really focus on our descriptions in our poetry. These have included ice, water and mud. It has been very messy but lots of fun and we have come up with some excellent adjectives!

We invited our families in to learn about the steps of building a reader. We discussed about how we read books and importantly how we can talk about the books that we have read and what we have learnt from them. Children and adults were then able to take part in a range of phonics and reading comprehension activities.

We had our Power of Reading Cafe all about the story Beegu by Alexis Deacon. We explored different sensory activities, alongside writing and applying the phonics sounds that we have been taught. Our families came to join us for the afternoon.

In Autumn 1, we have been learning about plants and how they grow, we have been growing our own Runner Beans. We have also been learning to identify deciduous and evergreen trees. We have been reading the traditional tale Rapunzel as well as identifying human and physical features in Geography. Taking a trip to our local Church to find these. The children have enjoyed recreating Artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s artwork using fruit and vegetables.
